Chapter 6 - The Maid's Confession

“Leave her alone, Vanessa,” Luca ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

Vanessa froze in her tracks. “Excuse me?”

“Emily hasn't done anything wrong,” Luca stated.

“She’s been encouraging Allison’s hysterical behavior all evening!” Vanessa shrieked, her perfect composure entirely shattered.

Luca looked at me. “Is that true, Emily?”

My mouth went completely dry. I thought about my mother lying in bed. I thought about the crushing medical debt. I thought about the absolute panic of trying to find another job before the end of the month.

Then, I looked at Allison. She had returned to her chair. Her gold wedding ring was resting against the edge of her untouched dinner plate. Her husband of seventeen years still refused to look her in the eye.

I lifted my chin. “No, sir. It is not true.”

Vanessa’s face hardened into a mask of pure fury. “Emily, you are fired. Get out of my house right now.”

My chest tightened painfully. “Miss Bellini, please—”

Luca interrupted, his voice slicing through the room like a razor blade. “No, she isn't.”

Vanessa whipped her head around. “Luca, she is a maid making a scene at our engagement party!”

He looked directly into her eyes. “No, Vanessa. You are trying to silence everyone who disagrees with you.”

The entire ballroom became completely, terrifyingly still.

Luca turned back toward me. “Emily, are you afraid of losing your job?”

My eyes filled with hot tears. “Yes, sir.”

“You won't,” Luca promised firmly.

I swallowed hard, my hands finally stopping their shaking. “Thank you, sir.”

Then, Luca asked something I hadn't expected in a million years. He had seen my micro-expressions. He knew I was holding something back.

“Did you hear Vanessa speak to Adrian before dinner began?” Luca asked smoothly.
