Chapter 2 - The Click of the Door

Graham didn't even wait for her response. He simply disconnected the line.

The sharp beep of the dropped call echoed in Claire's ear like a final, lethal gunshot to their marriage. A tight, cinematic close-up on Claire’s face revealed a woman whose entire universe had just collapsed. Her realistic facial micro-expressions shifted from heartbreaking betrayal to a sudden, hollow numbness.

Her husband didn't just want a divorce. He cared more about his new mistress than his dying wife and his newborn son. He was tossing them out like garbage to clear his path to total underworld supremacy.

"Send the divorce papers," Claire whispered into the dead, silent phone, her voice completely broken.

She slowly lowered her smartphone, letting it drop onto the sterile white sheets. Her natural breathing was ragged, catching in her chest. She slowly turned her head. Beside her bed was a clear plastic hospital bassinet. Sleeping peacefully inside, wrapped snugly in a soft blue and pink striped hospital blanket, was her infant son.

Claire reached her trembling hand out across the sheets, gently brushing her fingers against the baby's warm, incredibly soft cheek.

"You only have me now... Owen," Claire murmured softly, a sudden, fierce maternal determination hardening her brown eyes.

But the quiet sanctuary of the hospital room was instantly shattered.
