Chapter 5 - The Silent Alarm

Claire stared at the weapon. Her husband of four years, the father of the child sleeping peacefully beside her, was actually going to pull the trigger just to secure a business deal with a rival cartel.
The sheer, overwhelming betrayal should have broken her completely.
But as Graham raised the gun, aiming it directly at her chest, the terrified, sobbing woman in the white and blue patterned hospital gown completely evaporated. Claire didn't scream. She didn't beg for her life. She didn't drop to her knees and plead for Owen’s safety.
A strange, eerie, and utterly chilling calm washed over her face. Her realistic facial micro-expressions shifted from total panic to an expression of cold, calculating patience.
"You always were an arrogant fool, Graham," Claire said, her voice completely steady, entirely stripped of its previous tremor.
Graham frowned, his dark brow furrowing in confusion. His finger paused on the trigger. He expected hysteria. He expected tears. Her sudden, absolute confidence deeply unsettled his predatory instincts.
"What did you just say to me?" Graham growled, taking a threatening step closer to the bed.

"You think you tracked me," Claire continued, maintaining unbroken eye contact. She slowly reached her hand toward the side railing of her hospital bed. "You think you found a vulnerability in my fake ID. But you never stopped to ask yourself why a woman running from the Ashford syndicate would specifically choose a private medical facility in the heart of downtown Chicago."
👉 Graham realized something was terribly wrong, but the button Claire was about to push would seal his eternal doom.
