Chapter 4 - The Dangerous Realization

A dramatic reaction shot captured Dante slowly turning back toward Emily.
He didn't just see a crying woman. He finally, truly saw her. He noticed the dark, exhausted circles under her expressive brown eyes. He saw how painfully tight the degrading lace-trimmed apron stretched over her stomach. He saw her pale, malnourished skin and her violently trembling hands.
His expression morphed from stunned disbelief to devastating guilt, and finally, into a cold, highly controlled, apocalyptic anger.
Behind him, Vanessa's smug, confident smile completely disappeared. The color violently drained from her flawless face. She realized Dante was rapidly putting the horrifying puzzle pieces together.
Dante didn't yell. A quick, violent outburst was far too generous for whatever monster had tortured the mother of his twins.
He gently stepped closer to Emily. He raised his large, heavily tattooed hand and softly cupped her tear-stained cheek. His touch was incredibly protective and heartbreakingly gentle.
"Who did this to you?" Dante whispered, lowering his deep voice as he looked directly into her frightened brown eyes. His tone was dangerously composed, vibrating with a lethal promise.
Emily swallowed hard, her chest heaving as she tried to breathe. She didn't say a word. She didn't have to.
With slow, terrifying cinematic precision, Emily moved her gaze past Dante’s broad shoulder. She looked directly down the corridor, locking eyes with the woman in the deep-red evening gown.
