Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO SENT THE FILE
The anonymous envelope came from Thomas Keene, former Chief Financial Officer of Aegis Harbor.
He disappeared six months earlier after objecting to Marcus’s acquisition structure.
Aegis announced he resigned for health reasons.
His family said he entered treatment.
In reality, he was dead.
His body was found inside a submerged vehicle near an abandoned marina.
Police initially ruled it suicide.
The Aegis file changed that.
Thomas had copied the takeover records.
He scheduled the envelope to mail if he failed to access a secure account for thirty days.
The packet reached Caroline because Thomas believed she was the only original founder not fully controlled by Marcus.
He left a final recording.
“If you’re hearing this, Marcus knows I found the double-proxy plan.”
Thomas described the scheme.
The hidden trusts.
The medical reports.
The purchased attorneys.
Then he named Diane.
“She is not protecting Marcus. She is protecting the Hartwell family debt.”
The debt exceeded eighty million dollars.
Diane had secretly mortgaged family assets to cover failed investments.
The marriages were not merely ambition.
They were rescue.
Caroline’s shares would stabilize Aegis.
Priscilla’s company would erase the debt.
Marcus believed he was building an empire.
Diane was trying to prevent collapse.
That did not reduce the harm.
It explained the urgency.
Thomas’s recording ended with one final claim.
“If they cannot get both signatures, they will manufacture a crisis large enough to force control.”
