Chapter 2 - BEFORE THE PARTY

Six months earlier, Victoria Vane still walked.

She ran three mornings a week.

Managed acquisitions for Vane Atlantic Holdings.

Traveled alone.

Argued in boardrooms without raising her voice.

Then her car left the Merritt Parkway during heavy rain.

The official report said hydroplaning.

The first hospital said chance.

Richard said tragedy.

Bradley said family would handle everything.

Dr. Harrison Sterling said the injuries did not match the story.

He was the spinal surgeon called in after midnight.

The damage was severe.

Multiple fractures.

Cord compression.

Internal bleeding.

He operated for fourteen hours.

When Victoria woke, Bradley sat beside the bed holding her hand.

He cried.

Richard stood near the window and told her the company would wait.

Helen, their mother, had died years earlier. Victoria had only Richard and Bradley.

At least, that was what she believed.

Harrison checked on her daily.

He watched the family before he trusted them.

Bradley answered questions meant for Victoria.

Richard asked about prognosis before pain.

Both wanted to know whether she would walk before asking whether she was afraid.

During rehabilitation, Victoria began noticing missing details.

Her phone disappeared.

Then reappeared with messages deleted.

Company accounts were changed.

Her voting proxy was “temporarily reassigned.”

Richard said the board required stability.

Bradley said she needed rest.

Every concern became evidence that she was emotional.

Every objection became proof she could not handle pressure.

Harrison noticed bruising beneath the brace that did not come from therapy.

Victoria blamed transfers.

He did not believe her.

Not fully.

But he did not push.

Instead, he documented.

Measurements.

Images.

Device readings.

Dates.

He asked her privately whether she felt safe at home.

Victoria said yes.

May you like

Then looked toward the door before answering.

That pause stayed with him.
