Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE

Olivia took Emily to the lake house after the hospital cleared her.

The house had belonged to Olivia’s late husband, James.

He built the back deck himself.

Painted Emily’s bedroom yellow before she was born.

Taught Olivia how to repair the old boat motor.

Richard hated the house because he could not control what it represented.

A life Olivia had built without him.

Emily refused to go near the water.

Even seeing the lake through the window made her breathe faster.

Olivia closed the curtains.

“You never have to swim again unless you want to.”

Emily whispered, “Grandpa said brave girls do not cry.”

Olivia knelt.

“Brave girls cry when they are scared. Brave girls tell the truth. Brave girls ask for help.”

“Was I bad?”

The question broke something in Olivia.

“No.”

“Aunt Vanessa said I make you weak.”

Olivia held her.

“You make me stronger than anyone in this world.”

That evening, Detective Cole called.

Investigators had found additional files in Richard’s home office.

He had prepared a custody petition.

The petition accused Olivia of emotional instability, physical aggression, and unsafe parenting.

It included photographs taken at family events.

In one, Olivia argued with Vanessa.

In another, she pulled Emily away from Richard.

In a third, she appeared to slap Vanessa at the resort.

Every image removed the cause and preserved only Olivia’s reaction.

The petition was dated three days before the pool incident.

Richard intended to file it after the resort weekend.

He also prepared an emergency motion requesting temporary custody of Emily and management of the lake house.

The near drowning was supposed to become the centerpiece.

Cole asked Olivia whether Richard had threatened custody before.

“Not directly.”

“Indirectly?”

“He used to say mothers who make bad financial choices lose more than money.”

Olivia had thought it was arrogance.

Now she understood it as preparation.

The next morning, a black SUV appeared at the end of the driveway.

Olivia called police.

The vehicle left before officers arrived.

Security footage captured the plate.

It belonged to a private investigator hired by Richard’s attorney.

His job was to record Olivia after the arrest.

Any anger.

Any drinking.

Any moment Emily appeared distressed.

Richard had not stopped building the story.

He had only changed cameras.

Olivia installed security lights and alarms.

She hated doing it.

The lake house had once felt open.

Now every window seemed watched.

Emily noticed.

“Are bad people coming?”

Olivia answered carefully.

“No one is coming inside.”

“You promise?”

“Yes.”

That night, Emily slept in Olivia’s bed.

At 2:17 a.m., Olivia woke to the alarm.

Someone had entered the detached garage.

Police arrived within minutes.

They found no person.

Only an open window.

On the garage floor lay a wet child’s swimsuit.

The same floral pattern Emily wore at the resort.

It was not evidence.

It was a message.

Richard wanted Olivia afraid.

He wanted her exhausted.

He wanted fear to become instability on camera.

Olivia picked up the swimsuit with gloved hands and placed it inside an evidence bag.

Then she looked at Detective Cole.

“He is not trying to win the case.”

May you like

“What is he trying to do?”

“Make me break before it starts.”
