Chapter 10 - Corinne’s Motive Was Greed—But Also Possession

The financial investigation moved quickly after Elena’s return.
The fraud tied to the therapy foundation was real.
So was the money trail.
But greed alone did not explain everything.
Corinne had wanted money, yes.
She had also wanted status.
Access.
Control.
And eventually my name.
During questioning, she admitted enough through silence and partial statements for prosecutors to move aggressively.
She had not acted out of a single impulsive moment.
She had built toward this.
She had started by stealing from the foundation.
When Elena discovered it, Corinne panicked.
But instead of running, she saw an opportunity: if Elena vanished and was discredited, Corinne could remain inside the estate, near Sadie, near me, and eventually transform herself from “helpful household figure” into indispensable partner.
And that was exactly what she did.
She comforted me at memorial services for a woman she knew was alive.
She attended Sadie’s medical appointments while resenting every minute my daughter took from her.
She let people describe Elena as unstable and tragic, then nodded with false sorrow.
Finally, she accepted my proposal under a chandelier in the same estate where Elena had once lived as my wife.
That was why her slip at the reception mattered so much.
Cruel people often hide successfully for years.
Then one moment of contempt reveals the truth.
Corinne did not make a strategic mistake when she threatened Sadie.

She exposed who she had always been.
