Chapter 5 - The Cameras Had Seen More Than We Realized

The estate’s security system had been partially upgraded six months after Elena vanished.

At the time, I was told much of the older footage had been overwritten.

That was only partly true.

My private investigator, Warren Pierce, arrived that same night with a forensic tech who specialized in recovering damaged or archived surveillance data.

We worked until almost dawn.

The camera visible in the living room and entryway during the reception was newer, but the estate had long kept backup storage for older angles—including the breakfast hallway and rear service corridor from the week Elena disappeared.

Most of the files were fragmented.

Some corrupted.

But not all.

Around 3:40 a.m., the technician called us over.

He had recovered a short sequence from the morning Elena went missing.

The footage showed Elena seated at the breakfast table.

Corinne entered carrying a glass.

Orange juice.

She set it down in front of Elena.

They spoke—no audio.

A minute later, Elena stood up abruptly, staggered, and braced one hand against the table.

Then the footage jumped.

The next recovered clip showed Corinne at the same table, alone, using Elena’s phone.

My stomach turned.

“Keep going,” I said.

The third clip was worse.

Corinne opened the rear service door.

Two men in medical transport uniforms entered with a rolling chair.

Not police.

Not paramedics responding to an emergency call.

Prepared.

Expected.

Together, they moved an unsteady Elena through the corridor and out of frame.

I stared at the screen so long my eyes started burning.

Elena had not walked away.

She had been removed.

May you like

And the woman I had nearly married had watched it happen.
