Chapter 12 - Daphne Became the Witness Corinne Never Planned For
Corinne underestimated many people.
But she underestimated Daphne most of all.
The slap at the reception had turned a cautious witness into an unshakable one.
Daphne gave police everything.
Dates.
Incidents.
Statements.
Times Corinne isolated Sadie.
Moments she mocked Elena’s memory.
Behavior around the estate staff.
And most importantly, the details about that argument over orange juice before Elena vanished.
Because Daphne stayed calm and consistent, her testimony tied the emotional abuse of Sadie directly to the larger pattern of coercion and deception around Elena’s disappearance.
Other staff began speaking too.
A bartender remembered Corinne privately insisting on controlling which drinks went to Elena at a fundraiser.
A driver remembered transporting sealed envelopes to the same private facility months after the disappearance.
An accountant noticed event reimbursements that never made sense but had been approved from inside the household.
Once the truth cracked open, it became harder for anyone to pretend not to see it.
Daphne never asked for gratitude.
But Elena did.
One afternoon, while Sadie napped, Elena took Daphne’s hands and said:
“You protected my daughter when I couldn’t.”
Daphne cried immediately.
“I just did what anyone should’ve done.”
“No,” Elena said gently. “You did what the rest of us were too late to do.”
From that day on, Daphne wasn’t just an aide in our house.
