Chapter 3 - Sadie’s Mother Had Been Missing for Three Years

Sadie’s biological mother was named Elena Hartwell.

She had dark auburn hair, a quiet laugh, and the kind of patience that could calm Sadie with a single hand on her shoulder.

Three years earlier, Elena had disappeared from the estate.

No note.

No suitcase.

No confirmed sighting that held up.

Just a phone found turned off near the back service road and a house full of unanswered questions.

At the time, police treated it like an adult disappearance with competing theories. Some thought she left voluntarily. Others suspected a breakdown. A few quietly believed foul play but never found enough evidence to build a case.

I never believed Elena had abandoned Sadie.

Not once.

She adored that child.

She had spent months helping Sadie adjust to life in a wheelchair after a spinal surgery that saved her health but changed her mobility. Elena had slept beside our daughter’s room for weeks, learning every medication, every therapy schedule, every comfort routine.

She would never have walked away from her.

But grief makes people vulnerable in strange ways.

And Corinne knew exactly how to exploit that.

At the time Elena vanished, Corinne was not my fiancée.

She was a familiar presence in the house—someone who had drifted in under the excuse of helping with events, errands, and eventually Sadie’s care when the estate became too chaotic after Elena disappeared.

She was polished.

Useful.

Careful.

She never pushed too hard too early.

She let my shock, exhaustion, and guilt do most of the work for her.

And over time, she made herself necessary.

What I did not understand then was that she had not entered the vacuum left behind by Elena.

She had helped create it.
