They believed Thomas was tough but loyal.
He hosted annual barbecues.
Paid hospital bills quietly.

He also stole $4.8 million from their retirement accounts.
Rebecca discovered the first discrepancy while helping Helen prepare tax documents.
A pension contribution appeared twice.
One transfer went to the legitimate plan.
The second went to Mercer Consulting.

The missing money funded a lake house, private travel, and land purchases through shell companies.
Thomas planned to sell Caldwell Industrial within eighteen months.
