Daniel Cole—not the detective, but Rebecca’s older brother Daniel Thomas Caldwell—had left the family twelve years earlier.
He lived in Oregon.
Rarely called.
Helen said he abandoned them.
Thomas said Daniel became weak.
Rebecca remembered something else.
A fight in the garage.
Daniel accusing Thomas of stealing from an employee medical fund.
Thomas striking him.
Helen demanding Daniel apologize.
Daniel packed one bag and left.
The family story erased the accusation.
Detective Ethan Cole found him.
Daniel agreed to testify remotely.
He had saved old emails.
Thomas asking him to alter payroll.
Helen telling him to stop provoking his father.
Rebecca asking when he would come home.
Daniel never answered because Thomas threatened to cut off Rebecca’s college tuition if he contacted her.
The threat worked.
Again, isolation became leverage.
Daniel’s emails showed the pension theft began earlier than Rebecca believed.
Thomas first diverted a small medical-assistance fund after an employee’s wife developed cancer.
The employee later lost his home.
Thomas publicly paid for the funeral when she died.
The town praised his generosity.
He donated a fraction of what he stole.
Reputation purchased with victims’ money.
Daniel returned for the trial.
He and Rebecca met in a courthouse hallway.
No dramatic embrace.
Too much time.
Too many unanswered messages.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“For leaving?”
“For thinking distance was the same as safety.”
