Chapter 1 - Sign It Before the Sirens Get Closer

Adrian threw the handwritten rulebook onto the penthouse floor before his bride had even removed her veil.
The notebook hit the marble beside the bed and slid open.
WIFE RULES.
The words were written in black ink across the first page.
Across from him, Claire Whitmore stood barefoot in her white lace wedding gown, blonde hair pinned in a loose bridal updo, diamond necklace resting at her throat.
The city glittered beyond the glass windows.
A chandelier burned warm gold above them.
Champagne sat untouched on a silver table.
It should have been the first quiet hour of their marriage.
Instead, Adrian stood in a white dress shirt, black vest, loosened tux pants, and an arrogant smirk, holding a black leather whip loosely in one hand.
“From this moment on,” he said, “you follow my rules.”
Claire stared at him.
For half a second, her breathing stopped.
Then Adrian cracked the whip against the marble floor.
The sound exploded through the penthouse.
Claire flinched.
Only once.
Then her eyes changed.
Slowly, she slipped off both designer heels and placed them neatly beside the bed.
Adrian’s smirk widened.
“Good. Learning already?”

Claire lifted both hands into a calm guard position.
“No,” she said. “I’m making sure I don’t ruin the rug.”
His smile faltered.
On the sofa, Adrian’s phone was still recording. He had set it there himself, angled toward the bed, because men like Adrian loved evidence when they believed it would humiliate someone else.
Claire’s diamond necklace caught the chandelier light.
What Adrian did not know was that the necklace was recording too.
Adrian stepped forward and swung the whip toward her.
Claire moved before fear could catch her.
She stepped inside the arc, trapped his wrist, pivoted sharply, swept his leg, and drove him down in one clean self-defense takedown.
No scream.
No chaos.
No second strike.
Just movement, training, and the sudden sound of Adrian hitting the wood floor face-down.
The whip dropped beside the open rulebook.
“Wait—stop!” Adrian gasped.
Claire placed one knee across his back, controlled his wrist with both hands, and leaned close enough for him to hear her steady breathing.
“Never threaten a woman whose history you were too arrogant to research.”
Adrian grimaced.
“You’re insane.”
“No,” Claire said. “I’m a first-degree black belt.”
His face twisted against the floor.
“You never told me that.”
Claire’s voice was cold.
“You never asked me anything that wasn’t about how I would serve you.”
The private elevator chimed.
Adrian’s eyes widened.
Claire reached under the bed with one hand while keeping his wrist locked. Her fingers found the envelope taped beneath the frame.
She pulled it out and dropped it beside his face.
ANNULMENT PETITION.
Adrian went still.
The elevator doors opened.
Celeste, Adrian’s mother, stepped into the wedding suite in an expensive cream outfit, followed by two suited lawyers.
She froze.
Her son was face-down on the floor.
His bride was sitting firmly across his back in a wedding gown.
The whip lay beside the rulebook.
The annulment papers sat inches from his mouth.
Claire looked toward the elevator, calm and furious.
“Sign it,” she said. “Before the sirens get closer.”
Celeste’s face drained of color.
One lawyer whispered, “Mrs. Vale…”

Claire looked at him.
“Not Mrs. Vale. Not anymore.”
