Chapter 4 - I Planned to Survive
Police knocked at the suite door two minutes later.
Claire did not move until an officer identified himself.
Then she released Adrian slowly, stood, stepped back, and kept both hands visible.
“I used a trained self-defense hold after he threatened me,” she said calmly. “The weapon is on the floor. His phone is recording. My necklace camera is recording. The written rulebook is beside the weapon.”
The officers entered carefully.
Adrian scrambled up, suddenly the victim.
“She attacked me!”
Claire stood barefoot in her gown, breathing evenly.
The officer looked at Adrian.
Then at the whip.
Then at the notebook.
Then at Claire.
“Ma’am, are you injured?”
“No.”
“Did he strike you?”
“No. He threatened me and swung the whip toward me. I disarmed him and held him until help arrived.”
Adrian shouted, “She planned this!”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
Then she continued.
“I planned to survive whatever you thought marriage gave you permission to do.”
One officer turned away slightly.
Not smiling.
Almost.
Adrian was detained that night.
Celeste tried to interfere and nearly earned her own charge.
The lawyers became witnesses, whether they wanted to or not.
The wedding guests downstairs learned only that the reception had ended early due to “a private emergency.”
By morning, the private emergency was public.
Not because Claire leaked everything.
Because Adrian’s own phone had uploaded to the cloud account linked to his family office, and someone in that office panicked badly enough to notify counsel, the board, and eventually law enforcement.
The rulebook became evidence.
The whip became evidence.
The necklace footage became evidence.
Adrian’s voice became evidence.
From this moment on, you follow my rules.
Claire’s answer became the line people repeated.
No. I’m making sure I don’t ruin the rug.
Some people online laughed at that.
Claire did not.
She remembered the fear in her spine when the whip cracked against the marble.
Humor, she learned, sometimes arrives before survival has fully unpacked.
The annulment was granted quickly.
Adrian tried to fight it at first.
