Chapter 8 - Rooms She Could Learn How to Leave

But Claire knew the deeper victory was quieter.
It was not pinning Adrian down.
It was standing up afterward without apologizing.
It was learning that preparation did not mean paranoia.
It was hearing other women say, “I thought I was overreacting,” and answering, “Your fear was information.”
It was seeing a rulebook meant to trap her become the reason a court set her free.
It was understanding that self-defense was not the opposite of being a bride, a wife, or a woman.
It was the protection of remaining herself.
And it was Claire, years later, standing in a community center gym while a nervous young woman slipped off her shoes before her first self-defense class.
The young woman whispered, “I don’t know if I’m strong enough.”
Claire smiled gently.
“I didn’t either.”
The woman looked at her.
“What changed?”
Claire touched the small diamond necklace at her throat.
