Chapter 2 - The Forged Signature

The cinematic tension in the clinical room was absolute.
The heavy wooden door swung open, and Dr. Evans, the clinic’s head obstetrician, rushed in. He looked at the monitor, his eyes widening in sheer shock before turning to look at Sarah with a mixture of pity and deep concern.
"Sarah," Dr. Evans said gently, stepping up to the examination table. "You aren't just pregnant. You are fourteen weeks along. With twins. They are perfectly healthy."
Sarah gasped, covering her mouth with her trembling hands. Tears of pure, overwhelming joy flooded her eyes. After eight years of negative tests, she was finally going to be a mother.
But the doctor didn't smile.
"That isn't why we called you in, Sarah," the technician added quietly, turning the monitor so Sarah could see the digital patient file attached to the ultrasound. "Look at this."
Sarah squinted at the screen. It was a digital authorization form, dated exactly two months ago.
"This is a legally binding medical proxy," Dr. Evans explained, his voice turning grim. "Two months ago, your husband Michael logged into our portal. He uploaded this document, claiming you had suffered a severe miscarriage at home. And then... he authorized the cancellation of all your prenatal insurance coverage."
Sarah’s blood turned to freezing ice.
She hadn't known she was pregnant two months ago. But Michael clearly did.
The realization hit her with the violent force of a freight train. Two months ago, Michael had handed her a bitter-tasting "detox tea" that made her violently ill for three days. He told her it was just a stomach bug. The very next morning, he packed her bags, called her a barren disappointment, and kicked her out onto the street.
