Chapter 8 - The Shattered Illusion

"No," Brandon choked out, stumbling backward as if he had been physically struck. "No, that's impossible."
The elegantly dressed guests on the steps began whispering frantically. Some covered their mouths in shock; others actually pulled out their phones to record the spectacular downfall.
"Brooke," Brandon’s voice cracked, tears of pure humiliation pooling in his eyes. "Tell me the truth. Right now. Whose baby is that?"
Brooke backed away until her shoulders hit one of the towering white stone columns. She was cornered. "Brandon, please! It doesn't matter! He’s our baby! We raised him for a month! We love each other!"
"Whose baby is it?!" Brandon roared, his polished tuxedo suddenly feeling like a straightjacket.
Brooke squeezed her eyes shut, sobbing openly. "Marcus! It’s Marcus's! But he wouldn't pay child support, and you were about to get the mansion in the divorce! I had to secure a future for my child!"
The silence that fell over the grand entrance was deafening.
Brandon stared at the woman he had destroyed his marriage for. He had thrown away a brilliant, beautiful, loyal wife for a woman who used him as a human ATM to fund her secret life with another man. He was holding an engagement party at a mansion he didn't own, for a baby that wasn't his, funded by money he had to steal.
He had absolutely nothing.
Brandon dropped to his knees right on the red carpet, burying his face in his hands, completely broken.
