Chapter 7 - The Hostage Trade

Vincent grabbed Silas by the throat, violently slamming him against the marble pillar. He didn't shoot him. He dragged the bleeding, sobbing traitor toward the back exit of the mansion.
We escaped into the dark, rain-soaked night, slipping into one of Vincent’s armored, untraceable vehicles hidden in the subterranean garage.
Vincent drove us to a highly secure, heavily fortified safehouse on the outskirts of the city. He threw Silas onto the concrete floor of the basement and tied him to a steel chair.
For the first time since the attack, Vincent looked at me. His face was covered in dust and blood, but his eyes were incredibly clear. The agonizing pressure in his skull was finally gone.
He handed me his phone.
Call your father, Vincent typed.
I frowned, completely confused. My father? Why?
Because Silas didn't buy my debt, Vincent typed smoothly. He used your father's gambling debt as an excuse to bring a stranger into my house. Silas ordered your father to plant a secondary explosive device in my mansion tonight. That's why your father sold you for fifty dollars. He thought you were going to die in the blast anyway.
The cinematic realism of the absolute, apocalyptic betrayal crushed my chest.
My own father knew the house was going to blow up. He sold me specifically to be collateral damage so he could erase his gambling debts with Silas.

Tears of pure, unadulterated fury streamed down my face. I didn't cry for my family anymore. I picked up the burner phone and dialed my father's number.
👉 My father picked up the phone, completely unaware that his disposable daughter was about to execute his total ruin.
