Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Bait

"Hello?" my father answered, his voice slurred with alcohol. Background music blasted; he was already celebrating at a casino.

"It's Clara," I said, my voice completely devoid of any emotion.

My father gasped, dropping his glass. "Clara?! How... how are you alive? The news said the Moretti estate was bombed!"

"I survived," I replied coldly. "And I have Silas."

I put the phone on speaker and held it near Silas, who groaned in agony on the concrete floor.

"Listen to me very carefully," I commanded, channeling the absolute authority of the mafia boss standing beside me. "Silas failed the coup. Vincent is alive. The Russian cartel is going to slaughter whoever screwed up the deal. I will hand Silas over to the Russians, and I will give them your name as his co-conspirator, unless you do exactly what I say."

"No! Please, Clara!" my father shrieked hysterically. "I'm your dad! Tyler and I just wanted a clean slate! Don't tell the Russians!"

"Transfer every single dollar you just won at the casino into the offshore account I text you," I ordered smoothly. "Then you and Tyler walk into the 15th Precinct and confess to planting the explosive device at the Moretti estate. If you don't, the Russians will find you by morning."

"We'll go to prison forever!" he wailed.

"It's better than a cartel execution," I replied, and hung up the phone.
