Chapter 14 - The Wrong Seal

“Mrs. Blackthorn?” she said.

Not Mrs. Vale.

Good.

She knew which name held power here.

Clara looked at her.

“This is a private home.”

The woman’s smile did not move.

“My name is Dr. Maren Kessler. I’m the family reunification specialist appointed for August Vale.”

Clara’s hand tightened around her son’s.

“His name is August Blackthorn.”

Ethan stepped inside.

The sunlight behind him made his face harder to read.

Vivienne followed.

The room began noticing.

Adults turned.

Conversations died in small pieces.

Lydia’s head lifted near the cake table.

Her eyes found Ethan, then Clara, then August.

The old attorney did not rush.

That was how Clara knew she was furious.

Ethan crouched slightly, looking at August.

“Hello, son.”

August moved behind Clara’s skirt.

Ethan’s eyes flickered.

Only for a second.

Anger.

Then pain, performed fast enough for witnesses.

Vivienne pressed one hand to her chest.

“Oh, Ethan.”

Dr. Kessler opened the leather portfolio.

“Mrs. Blackthorn, under emergency review authority, Mr. Vale has been granted a monitored bonding period beginning immediately.”

Clara stared at the document.

No.

Not fear.

Recognition.

This was the same structure wearing new clothes.

A woman in a professional coat.

A paper with a seal.

A man standing too close.

A child being treated as if his body were a bridge to property.

Lydia approached then.

“May I see that order?”

Dr. Kessler smiled.

“Of course. And you are?”

“Lydia Mercer. Counsel of record for Clara Blackthorn and trustee counsel for the Blackthorn family structure.”

The smile weakened.

Ethan’s did not.

“Lydia,” he said softly. “Still guarding doors that don’t belong to you.”

Lydia took the order.

“My dear boy, I have outlived better threats in cheaper suits.”

Clara almost laughed.

Almost.

Ethan’s eyes moved to her.

“I came peacefully, Clara.”

“You came unannounced to a child’s birthday with private security.”

May you like

“I came because every legal path has been delayed by your fear.”

“By your record.”
