Chapter 16 - The Promise Ring

“A gift,” Ethan said. “For our first afternoon together.”

August’s fingers tightened around Clara’s dress.

Vivienne smiled through tears.

“He picked it himself.”

Clara looked at the backpack again.

Something about it was wrong.

Not the bag.

The weight.

Too structured.

Too deliberate.

Lydia saw her looking.

So did Ethan.

He reached down for it.

Clara stepped first and placed her foot on the strap.

“Do not touch that bag.”

For the first time, Ethan’s smile vanished.

The little shift in his face told her everything.

This was not only a fake order.

The backpack mattered.

Dr. Kessler said, “Mrs. Blackthorn, this is becoming adversarial.”

“It became adversarial when a forged order crossed my terrace.”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“Careful.”

Clara looked at him.

“No.”

One word.

The same word she had spoken on the floor five years ago.

The difference was that this time she was standing.

August, still behind her, reached up and touched the chain at her neck.

“The promise ring,” he whispered.

Clara looked down.

He called it that because when he was three, he asked why she wore it, and she said, “It reminds me of a promise.”

“What promise?”

“That people in this house are protected. Not owned.”

Now his small fingers brushed the black signet under the fabric.

Ethan saw.

His eyes sharpened.

“Still relying on your father’s tricks?”

Clara lifted her chin.

“Still frightened of them?”

Ethan moved.

Not toward her.

Toward August.

Fast enough that only a child would think it was affection.

Clara grabbed August and turned, shielding him with her body.

Lydia shouted, “Security!”

But August’s hand had already slipped beneath Clara’s chain.

The ring pressed between his palm and her chest.

By accident or instinct, the carved Blackthorn crest touched the small matching crest sewn inside the lining of Clara’s dress.

A safety stitch Lydia had insisted on after Clara began attending public events again.

A faint click sounded from somewhere beneath the floor.

Not the chandelier this time.

Lower.

May you like

Deeper.

The old house answered differently.
