Chapter 21 - Evidence and Memory

Later, after August slept in Clara’s bed with the stuffed whale under one arm and one hand tangled in her sleeve, Clara went downstairs.

The east salon had been cleared.

The cake covered.

The balloons gathered into the corner.

The forged order, the backpack device, the affidavit template, Dr. Kessler’s portfolio, the private security IDs, and the recordings were all cataloged.

Ethan had been taken into custody for questioning after the forged order was confirmed and the hidden recorder discovered.

Vivienne had left in a separate car with counsel.

Not arrested yet.

Not free either.

Dr. Kessler remained in the west sitting room with Lydia and two investigators, crying in the exhausted way of professionals who realize too late that their credentials have been used as stage dressing.

Clara stood beneath the upper corridor chandelier.

The same one from that night.

The red light was off.

The lens hidden.

The marble floor clean.

But memory does not care about polish.

She felt the slap again.

Then August’s hand on the ring.

Then Henry’s voice through the walls.

The house is older than your plan.

Lydia came up the stairs slowly.

At seventy-nine now, she pretended her knees did not hurt, and everyone pretended to believe her.

“You should be asleep,” Lydia said.

“So should you.”

“I sleep when enemies stop being repetitive.”

Clara gave a tired laugh.

Lydia stood beside her.

For a while, both women looked at the chandelier.

“You knew about the Child Protocol?”

Lydia sighed.

“In outline.”

“Not the recording?”

“No.”

“Of course he left a dramatic message.”

“He was Henry Blackthorn.”

Clara folded her arms.

“I hate this house sometimes.”

“I know.”

“I hate that it keeps being right.”

Lydia looked at her.

“Houses are not right. Evidence is.”

Clara nodded slowly.

“What happens now?”

“Ethan violated multiple orders, participated in presenting a forged court document, brought a recording device intended to capture a child, and appears to have prepared a false affidavit. His prior history makes this... substantial.”

“Vivienne?”

“Harder. But not impossible.”

“She knew enough to come.”

Lydia’s eyes softened.

“Yes.”

May you like

Clara looked down the corridor toward the nursery wing.

“August asked if Ethan wanted him.”
