Lydia closed her eyes briefly.
“What did you say?”
“That he wanted to use him.”
“Good.”
“It felt cruel.”
“It was clean.”
Clara swallowed.
“I don’t know how to raise a child whose father keeps becoming evidence.”
Lydia’s voice softened.
“You raise him with truth small enough for his hands and enough love that the truth does not become his identity.”
Clara turned to her.
“Was that in one of my father’s letters?”
“No,” Lydia said. “That one was mine.”
For the first time all day, Clara leaned against the older woman.
Lydia stiffened, then softened.
Neither spoke.
Some love was not maternal by law, but became maternal by staying.
The second case against Ethan was uglier than the first because the first had failed to teach him shame.
It had only taught him strategy.
Investigators found messages between Ethan and his new attorney, Reeve Camden, a family-rights specialist known for turning documented abuse into “high-conflict narrative.”
They found drafts of public statements.

They found payment records to the private security men.
They found Dr. Kessler’s contract, which had been presented to her as court-associated but funded through a nonprofit quietly backed by Vivienne’s remaining social network.
They found Caleb—not a person, but a code name.
Project Caleb.
The plan for August.
It stood for Child Access, Blackthorn Leverage.
Lydia read that aloud in Clara’s study and then took off her glasses as if keeping them on would somehow dignify the phrase.
“Child Access, Blackthorn Leverage,” Clara repeated.
Her voice was flat.
Sebastian muttered, “I’ve heard mobsters with better branding.”
No one laughed.
Not really.
The plan had three steps.
First, stage a reunification visit under color of court authority during a public-ish private event where Clara would hesitate to react strongly in front of guests.

Third, secure a recorded child statement or manipulated affidavit supporting emergency temporary transfer to Ethan, allowing him to challenge the Blackthorn Trust’s child-protection clause from inside a custody dispute.
