Chapter 3 - The Bulletproof Confession

The freezing night air hit Clara’s face as Vincent guided her toward a fleet of black, bulletproof SUVs idling by the curb.

He opened the heavy door of the lead Maybach and ushered her inside. Clara slid into the plush leather seat, pulling her black apron tightly around her shivering frame. Vincent climbed in right beside her, the heavy door slamming shut, plunging them into a suffocating, soundproof quiet.

The SUV smoothly accelerated into the city traffic.

Vincent stared at her profile in the dim streetlights. He looked at the dark circles under her eyes, the worn fabric of her cheap uniform, and finally, the massive bump resting beneath her shirt.

"Six months ago, you emptied our joint checking account and vanished in the middle of the night," Vincent said, his voice a dangerous, vibrating rumble. "You left a note saying you never loved me and found someone else. Why?"

Clara let out a bitter, heartbroken laugh. Tears finally spilled over her eyelashes.

"I didn't take a dime from that account, Vincent," Clara cried softly, turning to face him. "And I didn't leave for another man. I ran away because I was trying to save my baby's life."

Vincent’s sharp brow furrowed in absolute confusion. "Save the baby? From who?"

"From you!" Clara shouted, her maternal fear momentarily overriding her intimidation. "You told me you never wanted children! You said this bloodline was cursed! And when she found out I was pregnant, she played the recording for me!"

Vincent’s blood turned to absolute ice. "Who is 'she'?"

Clara wiped her tears, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper.

"Isabella," Clara answered. "Your new fiancée."
