Chapter 1 - The Hospital Room

At 7:30 p.m., the pediatric intensive care unit was a terrifying, suffocating symphony of medical alarms. I sat in an uncomfortable vinyl chair beside my four-year-old son’s hospital bed, watching his tiny chest struggle desperately for every single breath.

Leo had been running a severe fever for almost thirty-six hours. Just twenty minutes earlier, the digital thermometer had spiked to a terrifying 104.2°F. An oxygen mask covered half his pale, sweating face. An IV line was taped to his arm, and a pulse oximeter was clipped to a finger so tiny it seemed completely swallowed by the blue medical tape.

Every rhythmic beep from the heart monitor pierced right through my soul.

“Come on, baby,” I whispered, tears blurring my vision as I gently squeezed his hot, fragile hand. “Breathe. Mommy’s right here.”

My husband, Patrick, sat on the other side of the bed. He wore worn, faded jeans, heavy work boots, and a flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up. To anyone passing by, he looked like exactly what my wealthy, high-society family always claimed he was: a simple, blue-collar handyman who took on odd jobs and could never quite measure up to our family's elite standards.

My mother openly called him “the mechanic.”

My younger sister, Bianca, mercilessly mocked our small apartment, our used car, and even the modest wedding ring Patrick had bought me. Patrick never argued back. He never defended his pride. He just took the insults with a quiet, patient smile.

He didn't say anything tonight either. He just gently stroked Leo’s leg, his jaw locked tight, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the vitals monitor.

Then, my phone vibrated loudly on the stainless-steel tray table. I looked at the caller ID.

Mom.

My stomach instantly knotted up.

👉 I answered the phone hoping for a shred of maternal comfort, but I was about to receive a demand that would shatter my heart.
