Chapter 5 - The Blue-Collar Billionaire

I stared at him, my brain completely unable to process the words coming out of his mouth.
I knew the name. Every single person in South Florida high society knew Vanguard Sterling Capital. They were a ghost-like corporate titan. Commercial real estate funds, massive infrastructure developments, luxury hotel acquisitions, private equity. They controlled billions in assets across the eastern seaboard.
I let out a nervous, shaky laugh. “That’s... that isn't funny, Patrick.”
“I’m not joking.”
He picked up the encrypted satellite phone and unlocked the screen. He handed it to me. A private, elite financial terminal loaded instantly, displaying scrolling figures, global portfolios, and real estate assets that took my exhausted brain several seconds to register.
“The equity group that holds the controlling operational stake in the St. Regis location where your sister is currently hosting her party happens to be one of our subsidiary funds,” Patrick stated, his cinematic realism absolutely paralyzing. “And the private, high-interest personal credit line your mother uses to maintain her fake social lifestyle? It’s underwritten by a boutique finance firm I acquired four years ago.”
My breath hitched. My hands shook as I held the glowing terminal. “You're... you're a billionaire. Why didn't you ever tell me?”
“Because I grew up surrounded by people who only loved my money,” Patrick said softly, placing his hands gently on both sides of my face. “I wanted to know if you could love me when you thought I had absolutely nothing to my name. And you did. You chose the mechanic.”
Tears finally welled up in my eyes.
“I also quietly cleared several of your family’s overextended, massive debts behind the scenes over the years, just to spare you the stress of their financial crises,” Patrick confessed, looking over at Leo. “But your mother just referred to our son’s life as an inconvenience.”
