Chapter 4 - The Vanguard

I stared down at the dark, silent screen of my phone.

I didn't cry. That was the strangest part. After years of shedding desperate tears over every slight, insult, and manipulation from my mother, tonight I felt entirely, peacefully hollow. It felt as though a heavy steel vault door had finally slammed shut inside my chest.

Patrick stood up from his chair. “What did she say?”

“She told me to leave Leo with you and come play hostess at the party,” I said numbly. “She also said if I don't show up, she is disinheriting me and cutting me off completely.”

Patrick stood completely still. The soft hum of the medical equipment filled the quiet space between us. He looked at me, then walked over to the bed, gently sweeping a damp lock of hair from Leo’s feverish forehead.

Then he spoke. His voice was unusually low, completely stripped of its usual laid-back, gentle warmth.

“For five years, Clara, I let your family believe I was a nobody.”

I looked at him, thoroughly confused. “What?”

“I let your mother mock my flannel clothes. I let her mock my line of work. I let her insult our small apartment, because I knew you still held on to the desperate hope of having a real family. I didn't want to be the reason you lost them.”

Patrick reached into the back pocket of his worn jeans. He pulled out a small black leather sleeve I had never seen before. From it, he drew a sleek, heavy, unembossed metallic card with absolutely no printed numbers.

Then, he placed a slender, highly encrypted dark satellite phone onto the stainless-steel tray table.

“Patrick... what is that?”

“I don't just do hands-on contract work for small properties, Clara.”

The cadence of his voice shifted entirely. It was no longer the voice of a quiet handyman. It was calm, precise, and effortlessly, terrifyingly commanding.
