Chapter 7 - The Party Dies

Thirty miles away, the St. Regis grand ballroom was in full, glorious swing.

My mother, Eleanor, was holding court near the massive ice sculpture, dripping in diamonds that were secretly financed by my husband. Bianca, the birthday girl, was posing for professional photographers, wearing a custom designer gown, absolutely soaking in the adoration of the fifty wealthy guests.

At exactly 8:15 p.m., the live jazz band abruptly stopped playing.

The massive crystal chandeliers above the dance floor flickered once, twice, and then went completely dark. The entire ballroom was plunged into pitch-black silence, save for the emergency exit lights glowing faintly against the walls.

“What is going on?!” my mother shrieked indignantly, her voice echoing in the dark. “Where is the event coordinator?! Turn the lights back on immediately!”

Instead of the lights turning on, the heavy double doors of the ballroom swung open. Ten men in sharp black suits—Vanguard’s elite private security detail—marched into the room, holding heavy flashlights.

The lead security officer walked directly up to my mother.

“Eleanor,” the officer stated loudly, ensuring every single guest heard him. “This event is officially terminated. The venue contract has been voided by the property ownership group. You and your guests have exactly five minutes to vacate the ballroom before you are considered trespassing.”

Bianca gasped in sheer, unadulterated horror. “You can't do this! This is my eighteenth birthday! We paid for this room!”

“Actually, ma'am, your mother’s credit line has been permanently frozen,” the officer replied coldly. “The catering check bounced ten minutes ago.”

👉 My mother’s arrogant facade completely shattered in the dark, and she was about to make a desperate, fatal phone call.
