Chapter 1 - The Marble Counter

The sprawling, luxurious American lakefront kitchen was bathed in elegant, warm lighting. Outside the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, the tranquil water glittered perfectly. But inside the multi-million-dollar room, the atmosphere was suffocatingly toxic.
Claire, a thirty-something woman wearing a simple red sweater, sat completely frozen at the massive white marble island.
Standing directly across from her was Diane, her incredibly entitled mother-in-law. Diane wore a beige cardigan and a heavy pearl necklace, pointing an aggressive, manicured finger right in Claire’s face.
"Michael and Lauren deserve to live here," Diane demanded, her voice echoing off the expensive vaulted ceilings. "They are expecting a baby. You and Evan have this massive house all to yourselves. It’s entirely selfish. You need to pack your things and move out by tomorrow."
Claire didn't scream. She didn't throw her coffee mug. She slowly turned her head to look at Evan, her husband of five years.
Evan, wearing a tailored blue shirt, physically shrank back against the stainless-steel refrigerator. He was a passive, cowardly man who had never stood up to his overbearing mother a single day in his life.
"Evan?" Claire whispered, her voice quiet but laced with absolute devastation. "Are you seriously listening to this?"
Evan refused to meet his wife's eyes. He stared down at the expensive hardwood floor, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Maybe we should let them stay here for a year, Claire," Evan muttered pathetically. "It's just family helping family."

In the background, Evan’s brother Michael and his wife Lauren smirked proudly. Lauren took a slow, arrogant sip of her red wine, entirely convinced she had just bullied her way into a free mansion.
👉 Claire looked at her cowardly husband, completely unaware that she was about to make the most ruthless decision of her entire life.
