Chapter 5 - The Corporate Execution

Claire sat in the driver’s seat of her car, parked at the end of the long, manicured driveway. The massive lakefront estate glowed beautifully in the rearview mirror.

She pulled her encrypted smartphone from her red sweater pocket and dialed a direct line.

"Sterling," a sharp, professional male voice answered immediately.

Mr. Sterling was the senior partner of the most ruthless corporate law firm in the state, and he personally managed Claire’s seventy-million-dollar trust.

"Mr. Sterling," Claire said, her voice dropping all pretense of the submissive housewife. She spoke with the cold, lethal authority of a billionaire CEO. "It's time to pull the plug on Project Evan."

"Are you certain, ma'am?" Sterling asked. "If we execute the withdrawal clauses, his startup will be completely insolvent by morning. He will have absolutely zero assets."

"I am entirely certain," Claire commanded softly. "Freeze the corporate funding immediately. Liquidate the dummy accounts. And Mr. Sterling? Vanguard Holdings owns the lakefront estate he is currently sleeping in. I want them out. Today."

"I will dispatch the county sheriff and the asset seizure team at dawn, ma'am," Sterling replied smoothly. "They will be evicted with only the clothes on their backs."

Claire hung up the phone. She didn't cry. A profound, overwhelming sense of relief washed over her. She had spent five years watering a dead plant. Now, she was going to salt the earth.
