Chapter 7 - The Heavy Knock

"That must be Claire coming back to beg for her clothes," Diane sneered, setting her crystal champagne flute down on the marble counter. "I will handle this. I am going to tell her she has exactly ten minutes to pack a garbage bag and get off our property."

Diane marched confidently out of the kitchen and into the grand foyer.

She aggressively threw open the heavy mahogany front doors, a toxic, condescending insult already loaded on her tongue.

She didn't get to speak.

Standing on the front porch were four heavily armed County Sheriff’s deputies. Behind them, two massive black government SUVs were parked aggressively in the circular driveway.

Standing perfectly still in the center of the officers was Mr. Sterling. The sixty-year-old attorney wore an immaculate, razor-sharp gray suit and held a thick, heavy blue legal folder.

"Excuse me?" Diane demanded, her arrogant facade faltering slightly at the sight of the tactical vests. "What is the meaning of this? You are trespassing on private property! My son is a highly successful CEO, and I will have your badges for this!"

Mr. Sterling didn't even blink. He didn't look at her with respect; he looked at her like she was a parasite.

"I am looking for Evan," Mr. Sterling stated clinically, his voice cutting through the morning air like a frozen blade.

Evan rushed into the foyer, followed closely by a panicked Michael and Lauren.

"I'm Evan," he stammered, his face turning entirely pale. "Officers, what is going on here? Has something happened to my wife?"

👉 Mr. Sterling opened the blue folder, and the terrifying legal reality he revealed completely broke Evan's mind.
