Chapter 3 - The Private Investigator

Jason didn't call the police. The local police wouldn't understand the complex, deeply hidden financial fraud happening behind the closed doors of a luxury mansion.
He dialed his private, highly paid corporate investigator, a ruthless former federal agent named Marcus.
"Marcus," Jason commanded, his voice echoing with absolute, unquestionable authority. "I need a complete, unredacted financial audit on my ex-wife, Sarah Vance, and her new husband, David. I want every bank statement, every credit card receipt, and every offshore wire transfer for the last three years."
"Consider it done, Boss," Marcus replied instantly over the line.
For the next forty-eight hours, Jason didn't sleep. He sat in his dark hotel room, staring at his laptop screen as Marcus systematically ripped apart Sarah’s fake reality.
The evidence was absolutely, undeniably devastating.
Sarah hadn't spent a single dollar on Maya. The five thousand dollars a month Jason sent was immediately funneled into a joint account with David. They used the child support to pay the massive mortgage on the luxury home, to lease the sports car, and to fund extravagant, high-end vacations to Europe.
But the most horrific piece of evidence was a series of text messages Marcus had managed to extract from David’s unsecured cloud backup.
"The kid asked for new shoes today," David had texted Sarah.
"Tell her to tape the old ones," Sarah had cruelly replied. "I need that money for my Botox appointment on Thursday. Jason's check clears tomorrow."
Jason stared at the screen, tears of pure, unadulterated fury streaming down his face. His own ex-wife was actively, intentionally torturing their daughter for cosmetic injections.
