Chapter 5 - The Cruel Sabotage

Daniel stood up slowly, the wet scholarship receipt clutched in his hand. The water dripping from his ruined tuxedo pooled on the marble deck, but he didn't care.

He turned to face his beautiful, treacherous fiancée.

"You intercepted the foundation mail," Daniel stated clinically, his voice cutting through the silent terrace like a frozen blade. "You threw away a full-ride medical scholarship acceptance letter intended for my employee's son."

Vivian physically staggered backward, her champagne-gold gown shimmering in the pool lights.

"Daniel, be reasonable!" Vivian hissed, completely abandoning her innocent victim act. She stepped closer, lowering her voice so the guests couldn't hear. "She's just a maid! Her son doesn't deserve a two-hundred-thousand-dollar medical grant! I redirected the funds to my brother's startup. It's a much better investment for our family!"

The cinematic realism of the absolute, crushing evil taking place on the terrace paralyzed the wealthy onlookers.

Vivian hadn't just stolen a letter. She had actively embezzled hundreds of thousands of dollars from Daniel’s charitable foundation to fund her arrogant, incompetent brother’s fake business. And when Lea had accidentally discovered the discarded receipt proving her son had actually won the scholarship, Vivian had tried to permanently silence the maid by shoving her into the deep end of the pool.

"She was going to blackmail us, Daniel!" Vivian lied frantically, realizing she was losing control. "I pushed her because she threatened me! I was protecting you!"

Daniel looked at the woman he was supposed to marry in three weeks. He didn't scream. He didn't curse.
