Chapter 18

Maya squeezed her eyes shut, her chest heaving, trapped in the narrow service alcove with nowhere left to run. Sophia was crying hysterically now, her face buried into Maya’s neck.

The heavy, rhythmic thud of the mercenary’s boots grew closer, echoing off the marble walls. He was moving slowly, methodically, knowing he had trapped a defenseless woman and a child in a dead-end corridor.

"Come out, girl," the mercenary’s cold voice sneered through his ballistic mask. "Give me the kid and maybe I let you walk."

Maya looked around the dark alcove. Her hands brushed against a heavy cast-bronze decorative bust of an Italian ancestor sitting on a narrow marble pedestal. It weighed at least twenty pounds.

She set Sophia down behind a heavy linen chest. "Stay hidden, sweetie," Maya whispered, her voice deadly steady despite the terror ripping through her veins. "Don't make a sound."

Maya gripped the heavy bronze bust with both hands, lifting it off the pedestal. She stepped up against the corner wall, pressing her spine flat against the stone, holding her breath.

The mercenary rounded the corner, his rifle leveled at chest height, his eyes scanning the shadow behind the linen chest.

With a primal scream of pure protective rage, Maya swung the heavy bronze bust with all the strength in her body, crashing it directly into the side of the mercenary’s tactical helmet.

A sickening crunch echoed through the hallway. The sheer momentum of the blow shattered his visor and knocked the helmet sideways. The man groaned in agony, his rifle clattering onto the hardwood floor as he stumbled backward, clutching his broken jaw.

Maya didn't give him a chance to recover. She kicked the fallen rifle away down the hallway, grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp standing nearby, and thrust the solid metal base directly into his chest. The mercenary crashed backward over the stair railing, plunging twenty feet down into the dark foyer below with a heavy, final thud.

Gasping for air, her hands shaking violently, Maya ran back into the alcove and scooped Sophia into her arms. "I've got you! I've got you!"

Down in the foyer, the heavy oak front doors burst open with explosive force. Shouts in Italian and heavy gunfire erupted as the remaining house guards, led by a blood-stained, frantic Luca who had doubled back from the convoy, swept into the estate, wiping out the remaining mercenaries in a violent storm of crossfire.

Luca bounded up the service stairs three at a time, his rifle ready. When he reached the second-floor corridor, he saw the mercenary lying at the bottom of the balcony, the shattered lamp, and Maya standing in the red emergency light, holding Sophia tightly to her chest, unharmed.

Luca lowered his rifle, staring at the waitress from Queens in absolute, stunned disbelief. "You... you killed him?"

Maya looked at Luca, her face pale, her eyes burning with a fierce, unwavering light. "Nobody touches this child."
