Chapter 19

Thirty miles away, amidst the roaring storm at the Red Hook waterfront, the abandoned Atlantic Sugar Refinery was engulfed in chaos and fire.

Dante Russo strode through the shattered glass and twisted metal of the main processing floor, his assault rifle smoking in his hands. Around him lay the defeated remnants of Lorenzo Moretti’s ambush force. Dante had realized halfway to Brooklyn that Moretti’s demands were a distraction—a feint to draw him away from his home—and he had struck the refinery with a violent, terrifying speed that gave Moretti no time to execute his full plan.

On a high catwalk suspended over the dark, rusting vats of the old sugar plant, Lorenzo Moretti stood pinned against the railing, bleeding from a shoulder wound, his weapon empty. Behind him, tied to a heavy steel chair, was Elena Russo—battered and pale, but alive.

Dante stepped onto the catwalk, his heavy tactical boots booming against the iron grate. He raised his sidearm, pointing it directly between Moretti’s eyes.

"It's over, Lorenzo," Dante said, his voice an icy rumble over the sound of the rain crashing through the broken skylights.

Lorenzo coughed, spitting blood onto the iron grate, a bitter, mocking smile touching his lips. "You think you won, Dante? Look at you... chasing ghost drawings made by a traumatized child. While you were driving out here to play the hero... my men were breaching your compound in Long Island. Your daughter is already in a crate on her way to Europe."

Dante’s heart seized with a cold, paralyzing terror. But before he could pull the trigger, his tactical comms unit cracked directly into his ear.

It was Luca’s voice, breathing heavily. "Dante! The compound was attacked. Moretti’s squad broke through the west gate."

Dante stopped breathing, his grip on his weapon tightening until his knuckles turned gray.

"But the kid is safe," Luca continued, his voice carrying an uncharacteristic tone of awe. "The waitress... Maya. She held off the lead shooter herself. She protected Sophia, Dante. They are both alive. They are fine."

A massive, overwhelming wave of relief washed through Dante’s chest. He looked at Lorenzo Moretti, whose mocking smile instantly withered as he realized his grand final trap had failed.

"Your men are dead, Lorenzo," Dante whispered softly. "And my daughter is safe."

Dante squeezed the trigger once. Lorenzo Moretti collapsed over the railing, plunging into the dark waters below.

Dante sprinted across the catwalk, pulling out a tactical combat knife. He sliced through the heavy ropes binding his wife to the chair. Elena fell into his arms, sobbing hysterically, burying her face into his armored chest.

"Dante... oh God, Dante..." Elena wept.

Dante held his wife tightly, wrapping his massive arms around her frame, shutting his eyes as the nightmare finally ended. Yet, as he held his rescued wife in the burning, rain-swept refinery, a strange, persistent image flashed unbidden across his mind—not the face of the enemy he had just killed, but the brave, tear-streaked face of Maya Bennett standing in the rain, holding his daughter’s hand.
