Chapter 8 - The Dead Man Walking

The hospital door slowly swung open.

Julian turned around with a triumphant smirk, expecting to see the doctor returning with the death certificate.

Instead, the blood completely vanished from Julian’s face. His knees visibly buckled.

Standing in the doorway, perfectly healthy, wearing his crisp white dress shirt with his sleeves rolled up, was Alexander Sterling.

Julian stumbled backward, dropping the forged will onto the hospital floor. He looked like he had just seen a ghost. His jaw opened, but absolutely no sound came out.

"You always were a terrible actor, Julian," Alexander said, his voice low, vibrating with a terrifying, contained fury. He stepped into the room, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.

"Alexander... I... the doctor said..." Julian stammered, hyperventilating as his mind violently crashed. "How are you alive?"

"Because I didn't eat the cake," Alexander replied, his sharp eyes burning a hole through his former best friend. "But Celeste did. You almost killed your own partner, Julian."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the handcuffed woman in the bed, then back to Alexander. Panic completely consumed him. The arrogant, composed executive shattered into a desperate, cornered rat.

"Wait! Alexander, listen to me!" Julian pleaded, raising his hands. "It was her idea! Celeste manipulated me! She threatened me! I never wanted to hurt you, brother, I swear to God!"

From the bed, Celeste let out a furious, muffled scream of betrayal, thrashing weakly against her handcuffs.

Alexander simply shook his head in absolute disgust.
