Chapter 14 - JULIAN’S APOLOGY

Julian sent apology three years after divorce. Not first. First apologies were bargaining.
This one different. Elena, I used to tell myself I lied because I was afraid of losing you. Then: The truth is I lied because I was afraid you would make choices I could not control.
There. Then: I did not plan our marriage as a financial scheme. I loved you. Later, I let money and fear turn your trust into something I thought I was entitled to manage.
Then airport. I said you would have nothing because I wanted Vanessa to believe I was the person with power. Then: I was not.
Then: You did not ruin my business. I used conflicted money and expected you to approve after the fact. Then no request.
I replied: Thank you for saying it clearly. That was all. Then one year later, we met to transfer final tax document.
He looked older. Calmer. He said: “I’m sorry I made your father sound crazy.”
That hurt. Then: “I was scared he saw me accurately.” Maybe.
