Chapter 9 - CARTER RESERVE

Carter Reserve Holdings had existed four years. Bank records obtained in divorce discovery. Deposits: Consulting income.
Bonuses. Transfers from Carter Development Advisory. Nothing directly from my personal account.
Then one transfer: $210,000 from trust-backed business loan proceeds. Again downstream. Then expenditures.
Investment properties. Two small rental condos in Baltimore. Brokerage account.
Current net assets around $640,000. Julian had built separate wealth. Was it marital?
Much accumulated during marriage. Likely subject to equitable distribution depending tracing. He had disclosed entity on tax returns? Joint tax returns.
Yes, Schedule E entities buried. I signed returns. Could have known if I read every attachment.
I had not. That stung. Then Julian’s “no money” boast was even less literal.
He had money. I had career. Trust.
The cruelty was fantasy of control, not actual capacity to erase me. Then divorce accounting. Julian had not hidden entity from IRS.
He had minimized it to me. Still marital disclosure issue. Then Maya told me: “You need a divorce attorney separate from trust counsel.”
Good. I hired Rachel Kim. She reviewed finances.
My own earnings. Retirement. Stock compensation.
I was not helpless. That mattered. I had spent airport moment feeling like Julian could strip everything.
He could not. Even without inheritance. Fear had distorted.
Then equitable distribution. Carter Reserve partly marital. My trust separate.
Business interests valued. No one gets “everything.” Then Julian offered settlement.
He would waive claim to some joint assets if I agreed not to pursue civil claims over trust transactions. No. Separate.
Then he offered apology. Not currency. Then court.
We avoided full trial through mediation later. But first criminal investigation. Paul Reddick’s signature application.
Martin authorization. Julian’s role. Emails showed Julian sent consent draft to Martin: Use Elena authorization. We cannot wait.
Martin: I need direct confirmation due your fee. Julian: She is in transit and already approved. False.
Then Martin called me? No. He accepted.
There. Julian knowingly lied to trustee counsel. Then potential fraud.
He eventually cooperated. But before that, he did one more thing. He showed up at Margaret’s Savannah house.
Not violent. Not unannounced? He flew and rang bell.
I was there for second document review. Margaret opened door. Julian stood outside holding my father’s original watch.
Why? Dad gave Julian at wedding. Then Julian said: “I need ten minutes with my wife.”
I answered from hallway: “You have a lawyer.” He looked at me. Then at Margaret.
May you like
Then said: “There’s something your father did that she hasn’t told you.” Margaret’s face changed. For first time, I saw fear on her side.
And I realized Savannah had secrets too.
