Chapter 1 - The Hand Beneath the Deck

Bruno moved before I understood there was danger.
My four-year-old daughter Ellie was standing on the grass beside the raised wooden deck behind our Seattle home. The afternoon was cloudy but bright, the lawn still damp from the previous night’s rain.
Then Bruno exploded forward.
All 120 pounds of him.
He lunged across Ellie, his paws landing safely on either side of her, and planted his massive body between my daughter and the darkness beneath the deck.
His barking shook the backyard.
Ellie screamed.
“DADDY!”
I came running down the deck steps.
The first thing I saw was Bruno towering over my little girl.
The second was Ellie crying beneath him.
My brain reached the wrong conclusion immediately.
“BRUNO! GET AWAY FROM HER!”
He didn’t.
He turned sideways instead.
Not toward Ellie.
Toward the dark opening beneath the deck.
His lips pulled back.
A deep growl rolled from his chest.
I grabbed the hammer lying beside the unfinished railing repair.
Raised it.
Ellie sobbed:
“HE WASN’T HURTING ME!”
I stopped.
Then something moved beneath the deck.
A black-gloved hand slowly reached toward my daughter.
Bruno instantly stepped farther in front of her.
Everything inside me changed.
The dog wasn’t threatening Ellie.
He was shielding her.
“Ellie, behind me.”
Before she could move, an adult man began pushing himself out from beneath the deck.
His face remained hidden by the shadows.
One gloved hand reached forward again.
I charged.
My foot hit his torso once.
Hard.
He was driven backward beneath the deck.
No second kick.
I grabbed Ellie with my free arm and pulled her against my leg while Bruno remained between us and the opening.
“WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?”
The stranger groaned.
Then his hand moved.
Metal flashed inside the darkness.
He tightened his fingers around something small.
I leaned closer.
And my stomach dropped.
It was a silver key.
Not just any key.
It hung from a tiny blue enamel whale keychain.
My late wife Caroline had carried that exact key for eleven years.
May you like
And I had personally given it to her mother after Caroline died.
