Chapter 8 - The Metal Object Was More Than a Key

Police examined the key.

It still fit our old side door.

That frightened me.

We had changed the front locks after Caroline died but never the side utility door because I assumed only my key remained.

Linda had possessed working access to our house for two years.

Then handed that access to Raymond.

That transformed the case.

This was no longer merely about an estranged grandfather appearing in a backyard.

He had a key capable of entering my home.

Phone records showed he had photographed the side door on an earlier visit.

One message to Linda read:

Still works.

Linda replied:

Do not go inside. I mean it.

She later pointed to that response as proof she had set a boundary.

I pointed to the obvious question.

“Why did he have a key at all?”

She had no answer that helped.

The next morning every lock on the property changed.

So did the alarm codes.

For the first time since Caroline died, Linda no longer had unsupervised access to our home.

She called that cruel.

I called it necessary.
