Chapter 6 - The Birthday Attack Was About One Sentence Lila Said Before The Cake
I learned what triggered Vivienne only after Lila calmed down.
We were at my house.
She had showered.
Most of the frosting was gone.
Her red dress was soaking in the laundry room.
She was wearing one of my oversized T-shirts and holding a blanket around herself.
I asked:
“What happened before she touched you?”
Lila hesitated.
Then:
“I told Walter.”
My stomach tightened.
“Told him what?”
“That I still had the letters.”
“What did Walter say?”
“He said bring them after cake.”
There it was.
Vivienne heard.
Lila had apparently said it within earshot while guests were moving through the foyer.
Walter asked:
“What letters?”
Lila answered:
“The ones telling me not to talk about your office.”
Vivienne interrupted.
Said Lila was confused.
Walter told her:
“Let the girl speak.”
Then somebody called Walter away briefly.
Vivienne stayed.
Minutes later, she took Lila beside the cake.
Asked where the letters were.
Lila refused to tell her.
Vivienne said:
“You are ruining this family exactly like your mother did.”
Lila answered:
“My mom wasn’t a liar.”
That sentence triggered the attack.
Not childish misbehavior.
Resistance.
Vivienne shoved her face into the birthday cake because humiliation was the fastest way she knew to make a child feel powerless.
And then she made the mistake that ended everything.
