Chapter 1 - The Chain Around Maisie’s Ankle

Graham Grant heard his daughter scream before the double doors had fully opened.
The wedding reception foyer was supposed to be the quietest part of the mansion that evening.
Warm chandelier light.
Cream carpeting.
A coat-check station.
Scattered jackets.
Tall wooden doors leading back toward the ballroom.
A decorated banquet table near the wall.
And two large rolling suitcases sitting beside the coat-check area as if someone were preparing for a honeymoon.
Graham barely noticed any of it.
Because five-year-old Maisie was on the floor.
His daughter’s blonde hair had come loose around her face. Her gray-white flower-girl dress was bunched around her knees. One silver flat had nearly slipped off.
And around her ankle was a metal chain.
Sloane Mercer—still in her strapless white wedding dress, diamond necklace flashing beneath the chandelier—stood over her.
The wedding ceremony had not happened yet.
Within an hour, Sloane was supposed to become Maisie’s stepmother.
Instead, she jerked the chain upward.
Maisie cried out.
Then Sloane hurled the loose length back down.
CLINK—SMACK.
The metal struck against Maisie’s lower leg.
A light red scratch appeared.
Nothing severe.
But the humiliation was unmistakable.
Maisie sobbed.
Sloane glared down at her.
“YOU LITTLE BRAT—SIT THERE AND CRY.”
The wooden doors burst completely open.
Graham stepped through.
He froze.
Maisie.
The chain.
The fresh red mark.
His bride standing over her.
His face changed instantly.
“SLOANE!”
She spun around.
Graham crossed the foyer before she could explain.
One hard front kick struck Sloane in the torso.
THUD.
She flew backward into the decorated banquet table.
CRASH.
The lightweight table gave way beneath her.
Dishes.
Flowers.
Decorations.
Everything scattered across the carpet.
No second kick followed.
Graham turned away from Sloane immediately.
He dropped to one knee beside Maisie.
“Baby.”
His hands shook as he worked the fastening around her ankle.
Maisie threw both arms around his neck the second the chain came loose.
“DADDY… SHE HURT ME…”
“I know.”
He pulled her tightly against him.
“I’ve got you.”
Two silent servers stood several feet away, stunned.
Sloane remained dazed beside the broken banquet table.
Graham rose.
He guided Maisie behind him.
Then he looked down at the loose chain.
His anger took over again.
He grabbed it.
Walked toward Sloane.
She tried to sit upright.
“Graham—”
He looped the loose chain around the front of her neck at collar level without tightening it enough to choke her.
Not strangling.
Threatening.
Making her look directly at him.
Sloane froze.
For the first time that evening, the arrogance vanished from her face.
Graham’s fist tightened around the loose end of the chain.
His voice became ice.
“YOU BETTER PREPARE YOURSELF.”
Sloane went pale.
Maisie remained safely behind him.
And just before anyone moved again, Graham noticed something past Sloane’s shoulder.
The two large suitcases beside the coat check.
One had a silver luggage tag.
M. GRANT.
Maisie’s initials.
The other belonged to Sloane.
Graham had never packed either one.
And suddenly the chain around his daughter’s ankle stopped looking like one horrifying moment of lost temper.
May you like
It looked like part of a plan.
