Chapter 2 - Maisie’s Suitcase Was Packed for a Trip She Never Knew About

The wedding ended before it began.

There was no ceremony.

No first dance.

No champagne toast.

Graham had security move Sloane to a separate sitting room while his sister took Maisie upstairs, cleaned the scratch on her leg, and changed her out of the flower-girl dress.

Only then did Graham return to the foyer.

The two suitcases were still there.

He opened Maisie’s first.

Children’s clothes.

Pajamas.

Sneakers.

A toothbrush.

Hairbrush.

Her favorite yellow raincoat.

Three stuffed animals.

School medication.

A folder of medical information.

Enough belongings for weeks.

Not one night.

Not a weekend.

Weeks.

At the bottom sat a sealed envelope.

Printed across the front:

HARBOR PINES FAMILY TRANSITION CENTER

Graham stared at it.

He had never heard of Harbor Pines.

Inside was an intake confirmation for Maisie.

Arrival date:

The following morning.

Graham read it again.

The morning after his wedding.

Placement length:

Minimum introductory period: 30 days.

Reason for placement:

Severe adjustment disorder following remarriage. Aggressive resistance to new parental structure.

Graham felt physically sick.

Maisie had no diagnosis like that.

She was five.

She had cried about the wedding.

Asked whether Sloane would sleep in her mother’s old room.

Once said she wished her biological mother were alive to see her flower-girl dress.

None of that was pathology.

It was grief.

Then Graham saw the authorization.

His name.

His signature.

Except he had never signed it.

The wedding was not supposed to begin Sloane’s new life with Maisie.

May you like

It was supposed to begin with Maisie removed from it.
