The nursery plans had dates.
That hurt Graham more than the financial pages.
Renovation start:
Three days after the wedding.
Wallpaper samples.
Built-in cabinetry.
Crib placement.
A handwritten note from Sloane:
Clear all Rachel remnants before contractor arrival.
Rachel remnants.
Graham sat down.
Maisie’s bedroom contained several things that had belonged to her mother.
A framed watercolor.
A jewelry box.
Two children’s books with Rachel’s handwritten notes inside.
The stuffed lamb Maisie slept with.
Sloane had categorized them as remnants.
Not memories.
Not a child’s connection to her dead mother.
Clutter from a previous family.
Then Graham found another note.
Once M is settled, we can finally start our own family without constant regression.
That phrase explained the emotional core.
Sloane did not see herself joining Graham’s existing family.
She saw marriage as replacing it.
Maisie was not a daughter she was struggling to love.
