Chapter 7 - The SUV Was Chosen Because It Looked Like Negligence
The plan relied on one assumption:
A locked SUV at a busy resort could be explained as a terrible mistake.
Valet confusion.
Parent distraction.
Keys misplaced.
Children climbing inside.
A tragedy nobody intentionally caused.
That was why Lucinda kept the keys.
She needed control of access while preserving the appearance of ordinary confusion.
She had even asked a valet supervisor earlier that afternoon whether resort cameras recorded the entire vehicle bay or only the main driveway.
The supervisor thought it was a security question.
It wasn’t.
Grant had also moved one portable sign several feet before the children were placed inside.
The sign partially blocked one camera’s view of the passenger side.
He did not know another camera mounted under the porte-cochère covered the same area from above.
That mistake preserved almost everything.
Investigators later concluded there was no sophisticated mechanical sabotage.
No hidden device.
No altered air-conditioning system.
They simply intended to keep the children locked inside long enough for heat and delay to do what they hoped.
That simplicity horrified Silvio more.
They did not need elaborate technology.
Only keys.
