Chapter 9 - Silvio Had to Explain the Punch and the Shove
Silvio protected his children.
He also used force.
Those were separate facts.
Grant had blocked him while his children remained locked inside a dangerous vehicle and mocked him with:
Are they still alive?
Silvio punched him once.
Then Lucinda moved toward the SUV.
Silvio grabbed her wrist, took the keys, and shoved her into the brochure rack.
Later Ethan asked:
“Were you going to keep hitting Uncle Grant?”
“No.”
“Why did you punch him?”
Silvio thought carefully.
“Because I was terrified and angry, and he was keeping me from you.”
“Was it okay?”
The easy answer would have been yes.
The comforting father answer.
Instead Silvio said:
“I needed to get to you. But I also hit him very hard because I was furious.”
Ethan watched him.
“Both?”
“Both.”
Silvio gave investigators the same version.
No attempt to make himself perfect.
He had one priority in that moment:
Get the keys.
Get the children.
Everything beyond what was needed for that deserved honest scrutiny.
He later accepted responsibility for the physical confrontation through the legal process.
Protective love was not permission to become careless with violence.
