Chapter 10 - Camilla Had Been Afraid She Broke Grandpa’s Secret
This was why Camilla went pale at the auction.
Not because she knew the envelope’s contents.
She didn’t.
She recognized the seal.
When the clock shattered and the envelope appeared, she remembered Victor’s notebook immediately.
Then Marco screamed for it.
Camilla became terrified.
She thought she had broken not only the antique—
but Grandpa’s secret.
That explained why she reached for the envelope after I punched Marco.
She was trying to obey Victor.
Not hide something from me.
When I understood that, I felt terrible for the way I had looked at her.
That night I sat beside her bed.
“You didn’t do anything wrong by reaching for it.”
“But Grandpa told me.”
“I know.”
“I was supposed to give it to you.”
“You did.”
She frowned.
“No. You picked it up.”
I smiled.
“You made sure I knew it mattered.”
She considered that.
Then whispered:
“Is Grandpa mad I broke the clock?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
Because Victor had loved antiques.
But he loved Camilla more.
I said:
“Grandpa would probably complain about the repair bill for ten minutes.”
She giggled.
“Then he’d ask if you were okay.”
