Chapter 12 - I Had to Answer for the Punch

Marco lunged for the envelope.
Then attacked me.
I punched him once.
That happened quickly.
And unlike some moments of rage I have regretted in my life, I did have an immediate reason to stop him from physically taking what I was holding.
Still, once Marco fell into the jewelry display, I did not hit him again.
That mattered.
The auction footage showed the sequence clearly.
Marco advancing.
Me securing the envelope.
Marco attacking.
One punch.
Then stop.
I gave investigators the same account without embellishment.
I did not describe myself as heroic.
Camilla had watched her father hit another adult.
Later she asked:
“Did you punch him because of Grandpa?”
“No.”
“Because of the envelope?”
“Because he attacked me while trying to take it.”
She looked thoughtful.
“Would you punch him now?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because now he isn’t attacking me.”
That answer seemed obvious.
It was still worth saying.
