Chapter 5 - THE FIRE

The fire stopped looking accidental when old evidence showed the same marine accelerant used aboard Victor’s yacht had been poured through my guesthouse.
The arson breakthrough came from a detail no one expected.
My burn surgeon.
Dr. Hannah Reed had saved my clothing from the fire because police originally requested it before deciding accident.
Evidence storage kept.
The hem of my nightgown contained microscopic residues of a marine-grade accelerant.
Same brand used on Blue Horizon.
Sold primarily to boatyards.
Hale marina stocked it.
Then floor samples from guesthouse original investigation had generic gasoline signature, not marine accelerant, because lab combined samples.
New testing separated.
Marine accelerant present near staircase.
Intentional.
Then ignition source.
Electrical outlet had been overloaded deliberately using a damaged adapter.
Fire designed to look electrical after accelerant spread.
Sophisticated enough?
Not necessarily.
Someone familiar with marina maintenance.
Victor.
Nolan.
Others.
Then Victor’s purchase records.
He bought replacement adapters two days before.
Normal household purchase maybe.
Then Lydia testimony.
Victor smelled of marina solvent.
Then Nolan.
Saw gas cans.
Then Mara.
Saw one inside.
Then Victor’s browser history from recovered laptop:
electrical fire origin indicators.
Searched five days before.
There.
Strong.
Then prosecutor filed attempted murder/arson charges.
Victor denied intent to kill.
He said he planned to burn empty guesthouse for insurance/redevelopment but believed I was staying at rehabilitation overnight.
Was I?
I had been scheduled for a follow-up overnight evaluation? Wait before fire I hadn't been burned yet. So no. Need plausible reason he thought empty: I was supposed to stay with friend? Let's formulate.
The night before fire, I had told Mara I might stay at lake house? Hmm.
Victor claimed he believed I was attending a charity retreat and would not return until next morning.
But calendar showed event canceled.
Did he know cancellation?
Text from me to him at 6:12 p.m.:
Heading home early. See you tonight.
Read receipt.
There.
He knew I was home.
Then his defense collapsed.
He said he did not read.
Phone logs opened.
Then one text from Victor to Nolan at 10:31:
Keep everyone away from guesthouse after midnight.
Nolan:
Evelyn’s there.
Victor:
I know.
There.
That was devastating.
Nolan had deleted his copy.
Carrier records recovered.
Then why Nolan did not stop?
He said he thought Victor planned surprise eviction/security removal, not fire.
Maybe.
Then at 11:50, Nolan saw cans and understood.
Why no immediate warning?
Fear.
Then after ignition, he ran toward guesthouse.
Victor stopped him.
Nolan disobeyed eventually and called fire crew.
That may have saved me.
Important.
Then my rescue.
I had believed Victor pulled me from fire because that was what he told press.
Actually marina worker found me near side window.
Victor arrived later.
Another lie.
Then press photos showed him wrapped in blanket looking heroic.
He used my burns to improve image.
That realization hurt.
Then insurance.
Victor filed claim next day while I was sedated.
Claim included statement:
No known suspicious circumstances.
False.
Then attempted murder case became strong.
Then yacht explosion.
Could Lydia face charges?
Yes.
Reckless destruction, arson-related property damage, evidence interference.
She confessed.
Prosecutors considered cooperation.
No one aboard.
Still serious.
Then Mara.
She asked:
“Are you angry at Lydia?”
“Yes.”
“She helped expose Dad.”
“Yes.”
Both.
Ends do not erase means.
Then Blue Horizon insurance.
Claim denied because intentional destruction by third party linked to family investigation? Complex.
Hale Maritime absorbed loss.
No payout.
Then fireproof box ledger.
Original with Nolan.
Turned over.
Then E. Hale Advisory.
Financial fraud count.
Then Victor’s case grew.
Attempted murder.
Arson.
Fraud.
Identity theft.
Obstruction.
Insurance fraud.
Mara testified against him.
That broke her.
He called her traitor from jail phone.
Recorded.
Then Gloria? Not in this story. Fine.
Then one more twist.
Victor had not acted alone financially.
A family attorney named Charles Vane had created E. Hale Advisory.
He claimed Victor instructed.
He took fees.
Cooperated.
No role in fire.
Good.
Then redevelopment investors.
They had no knowledge.
Project canceled.
Property frozen.
Then I had to decide what to do with waterfront mansion.
Joint marital asset.
Divorce underway.
I could fight for it.
I did not know if I wanted it.
Not yet.
First:
trial.
The fire engineer reconstructed the burn pattern using photographs taken before renovation crews entered the guesthouse. The accelerant trail began near the rear service door, crossed the lower hallway, and stopped below the staircase.
Whoever set it wanted fire to travel upward.
To where I slept.

That pattern destroyed Victor’s claim that he only meant to damage an empty building.
Buildings do not become accidentally targeted room by room.
